About Brian Beaton

Dr. Brian Beaton is a subject matter expert on IT and society trends, data services, human factors in data science, and machine teaching. From 2015-2018, Dr. Beaton was Director of Cal Poly’s Center for Expressive Technologies and co-organizer of the “Social Facets of Data Science” workshop (U.S. National Science Foundation Award #1632499). Dr. Beaton is also the past Program Coordinator at the California Cyber Training Complex (2016-2017). Dr. Beaton’s research has been published by the IEEE Computer Society, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), Duke University Press, University of California Press, University of Texas Press, and Palgrave Macmillan.

Before joining Cal Poly, Dr. Beaton was a full-time professor in the School of Information Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Beaton also directed the University of Pittsburgh’s Sara Fine Institute for Interpersonal Behavior and Technology, co-directed the Community Informatics Research Group (CIRG), and served as Co-PI for Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Grant #21300668.
