M.A. History - Apply

Minimum Requirements for Administration:

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university.
  • A grade point average of not less than 3.0 in the last 90 units of undergraduate course work.
  • Previous coursework in History. (This may be waived at the discretion of the Graduate Coordinator.)
  • Applicants whose preparatory education was principally in a language other than English, will need to demonstrate English proficiency. This is typically done through the TOEFL exam. Please see Cal Poly Admissions’ page for international students for more information about this requirement.
  • For applicants seeking admission for Fall 2017 or later, the GRE General Test is also required.

How to Apply:

The application consists of two parts, which need to be submitted via two separate websites: CSU Mentor and Interfolio. Follow the directions below to ensure you submit a complete application.

  1. Go to CSU Mentor to complete a Cal Poly SLO Application. Cal Poly's Graduate Education website also provides tips on completing the application.
    1. Enter all information requested, have official transcripts sent to Cal Poly Admissions from your undergraduate institution(s), and (if applying for Fall 2017 or later) have your GRE scores sent electronically (Institutional Code 4038).
    2. Note that you can only apply to one graduate program at Cal Poly and that you cannot defer your application from one quarter to another.
  2. Follow the Graduate Education website to the list of Master’s Degree programs and then the link to Interfolio for the term of desired enrollment. Complete the entire ePortfolio (including name, Empl ID, UG major and institution, cumulative GPA, last 90 units GPA, and any required test scores.)
    1.  For the History M.A. program, the ePortfolio must also include:
      1. Statement of Purpose
      2. Unofficial transcripts
      3. Sample of scholarly writing approximately 4,000 to 5,000 words, or 8 to 10 pages, in length. Preferably the writing sample will be a research-based paper from a history course.
      4. Three letters of recommendation are required for applicants seeking admission for Fall 2017 or later.
      5. For tips on what constitutes a strong writing sample and statement of purpose, see our Program Guide to Graduate Study (PDF) (also available as a fully-accessible "text-only" PDF).
    2. You MUST click “submit” before Grad Ed or the History Department can view your ePortfolio. You may still upload information after clicking submit.
    3. The ePortfolio must be completed within one month of the application deadline.
  3.  An application is NOT complete unless all information requested on both CSU Mentor and Interfolio is provided.
  4. If you have any questions about how to apply, how to use Interfolio, or the status of your application, please contact the Grad Ed Office (grad@calpoly.edu; 805-756-2328).
