The popularity and notoriety of Hearst Castle and William Randolph Hearst are known far and wide. However, before ground broke on Hearst Castle, San Simeon was a bustling townsite, where steamships brought goods and passengers, and provided a port for local goods to be sold in markets further afield. The Sebastian Store, State Historic Landmark 726, dates to the mid 1800s, and played an important role in the history of the townsite. Now one of the only remaining buildings from that period, learn how studying the architectural history of the building revealed a vibrant history separate from the Hearst Castle narrative.
